Lionel Messi scored a 19th minute winner as Barcelona moved ever closer to regaining the Spanish title with a 1-0 victory at Getafe on Saturday night.
Barcelona had not won in the Coliseum since 2005 and owed victory to the Argentine's 20th goal of the season.
Real Madrid kept up the pressure on their big Primera Liga rivals by defeating Recreativo Huelva 1-0 to stay six points adrift.
Brazilian Marcelo scored three minutes into the second half as Real made it 15 wins from 17 league matches under former Tottenham coach Juande Ramos.
"We are still hanging in there and keep fighting for every three points," said Marcelo.
"We just have to hope Barca drop some points. I think Sevilla could do us a favor this week (the two sides meet on Wednesday) and get at least a draw at Barcelona."
The same night Real encounter Madrid neighbors Getafe.
Barca coach Pep Guardiola fielded a strong team for the away trip and they responded to cap a fine week after completing a Champions League quarterfinal win over Bayern Munich.
Goalkeeper Victor Valdes made his 300th appearance for the Catalan giants but was rarely tested as Barca dominated.
Messi scored after a pass from Xavi and fellow striker Samuel Eto'o had other chances to extend the lead, hitting the post in the second half, but they still eased to victory.
MADRID (AFP) – Barcelona turned on the style again at Camp Nou on Wednesday, crushing Sevilla 4-0 to restore their six-point lead at the La Liga summit.
Real Madrid had closed to within three points with a morale-boosting, late 3-2 win over Getafe on Tuesday but Barcelona show no signs of cracking under the pressure and destroyed third-placed Sevilla even without talisman Lionel Messi.<br />
Real have been the experts of late goals this season, but Barcelona prefer seeing off teams with early goals and scored twice in the first 16 minutes to seize control.<br />
Andres Iniesta scored a sensational opener after just two minutes before Samuel Eto'o struck his 27th goal of the campaign.<br />
Xavi and Thierry Henry added second half goals and Barcelona now have 92 goals for the season as they target Real's all-time record of 107 set when they won the league title in 1990.<br />
The win was all the more impressive as it was achieved without the magical Messi who was left out after being unable to train due to stomach pains.<br />
Coach Pep Guardiola decided not to take any risks with a trip to Valencia on Saturday and then the Champions League semi-final against Chelsea three days later.<br />
Sevilla must have been relieved not to see Messi, who scored twice in Barcelona's 3-0 success over Sevilla earlier in the season, but the league leaders are far from a one man team.<br />
It was a big day for Sevilla reserve goalkeeper Javi Varas who was between the sticks with first choice Andres Palop suspended.<br />
But Varas had barely touched the ball before Iniesta curled in a terrific opening goal after 120 seconds that gave the stand-in goalkeeper no chance.<br />
Eto'o then spurned a great chance before getting his goal in the 16th minute after Xavi had unlocked the Sevilla defence.<br />
In the goalscoring charts Eto'o is two goals ahead of Valencia's David Villa who scored twice in his team's 2-1 win over Real Betis.<br />
Xavi scored early in the second half to wrap up the game and Henry then bagged his 16th goal of the campaign.<br />
Sevilla, who face Real at home on Sunday, have now lost their last three matches and Valencia are now just two points behind after beating Betis 2-1.<br />
Villa may be heading for a big summer move but his loyalty to Valencia remains unquestioned and he has scored 25 out of their 60 league goals this season.<br />
"Villa is a great footballer and he is committed to the Valencia cause," emphasised coach Unai Emery.<br />
"It is great for us to close in on Sevilla and now we are focussed on the Barcelona game on Saturday when I expect a carnival atmosphere at the Mestalla."<br />
Earlier this season, Valencia were thrashed 4-0 by Barcelona.<br />
The pressure is now on Atletico and Villarreal, lying joint sixth six points behind Valencia, with Atletico at Racing Santander on Thursday while Villarreal entertain Recreativo Huelva on the same day.
