Answer: All of the above. Familiar places reminds me of the locations I've been to.
Unfamiliar locales will trigger my interests and the next thing you know my bags are packed and ready to explore the places mentioned in the book/books.
Alien/Fantasy realms I layan just for kicks.

to me reading history books is good but be careful to not fall for the culture of pretentiousness that exists in some reading communities.just because a book is educational doesn't mean it should be boring.however, reading the history books isn't always the same as reading a page turning novel.go figure.

generally i like male protagonist just because, i'm a guy, so its alot easier to put myself in their shoes and get a better, easier to understand perspective in most cases, for me at least.to me female protagonist just work less well in settings where physical attributes contribute so much to survival unless their natural inferiority plays into the story.what say you @seribulan?
