Pre-season technical reshuffle at Ferrari

Ferrari has made changes to its engineering staff ahead of the 2011 season, with ex McLaren employee Pat Fry now assuming the role of Head of Race Track Engineering as its former occupant, Chris Dyer, awaits further confirmation.

Ferrari’s changes come following meetings for Team Principal Stefano Domenicali and company Chairman Luca di Montezemolo, who have mutually elected to make the switches ‘aimed at improving efficiency of the team in its work, both at the track and the factory,’ according to a statement on the Italian squad’s website.

Joining the Maranello outfit for the first time is Neil Martin, who slots into the leading position at the newly-formed Operations Research department; 38 years old, the Englishman has previously worked with McLaren before moving to Red Bull and will now report to Technical Director Aldo Costa.

After joining from McLaren last year, Fry’s move to Head of Race Track Engineering leaves Australian Dyer (top) – former Race Engineer to both Michael Schumacher and Kimi Räikkönen - waiting in the wings, with his role set to be ‘redefined in the next few days’.

'Vettel would never partner Alonso' – Marko

Red Bull Racing team advisor Helmut Marko believes World Champion Sebastian Vettel would be 'stupid' to, as current internet rumours suggest, one day join Ferrari alongside title rival Fernando Alonso. At present, the German has one year remaining on his contract with an option for 2012.

“Sebastian would not leave us only for the sake of the legend that is Ferrari,” Marko explained to German publication Bild.

“He is smart enough to know that the circumstances would all have to fit in and he won't be moving to Ferrari as long as Fernando Alonso is there   - otherwise he'd have to be stupid.”

The former driver went on to stress that Vettel's current squad also possesses the strongest technical support:

“We are the World Champion team and as long as we offer Sebastian a package that is better than others, he mustn't go away just because of an historical image.”

Alonso tips Schumacher as biggest threat

Fernando Alonso has spoken out about his rivals ahead of the 2011 season, and claims that Michael Schumacher will be his biggest threat on-track this year. His comments come after a difficult season for veteran racer Schumacher, who failed to make the podium and was largely outperformed by team-mate Nico Rosberg.

The Ferrari driver is unwilling to dismiss Schumacher’s threat however, and does not want to rule out the 42-year-old. Talking to press at the annual Wrooom event at Madonna di Campiglio, Alonso explained that he believes the German will be fighting at the front if his car is strong enough:
“There will be five World Champions on the track and the most dangerous Champion for me is always Michael. Now in January if I have to choose one name I have to say Michael. He is seven-times Champion.

"He has nothing to prove. He had a difficult season but he is still a Champion. He is still super class and if the car is right he will be a contender."

Alonso also mentioned his other main opponents, but is hoping that Ferrari’s new challenger will be strong enough to consistently compete at the front, allowing for another chance of recapturing the world title.

"Hopefully our car is better than the others and my toughest rival next year is Felipe," he said. “No doubt Sebastian will be a contender. He will have experience and will be calm in certain moments. He will drive better than last year and that makes him dangerous to us. McLaren will also be one of the favourites."
