aku suka ngan idea2 mamat khalid walaupun sesetengah org kata idea2 dia tak bagus...
karya dia paling aku suka zaman2 dia buat drama slot odisi untuk 10 on 10 dulu ( aku lupalah ape tajuk dia...)

Meanwhile, back at the cinema:
THE GOLDEN COMPASS was mind-blowing! I could swear those animals were real! Two friends (one, a former student of mine) were involved in the making of the film. Check out their websites by typing CAROLYN EE & HANS RIJPKEMA. But more interesting for me than THE GOLDEN COMPASS is ANAK HALAL (Legitimate Child) by Mr Nice Guy, Osman Ali (also a former student). Yes, a film that is interesting (it's not often that I use euphemisms). Obviously Osman is making references to Malaysian cinema history in ANAK HALAL. Harking back to the Golden Age of Malay films in the 1950s and opting to be classicist in his visual style (though a bit erratic), he also depicts the class struggle as in P Ramlee's ANTARA DUA DARJAT (Between Two Classes), even mentioning that title in the dialogue. A little belatedly, Osman is articulating what has already been done intelligently in AMERICAN GRAFFITTI (USA), TENTANG DIA (Indonesia) & UNUSUAL YOUTHS (Hong Kong). I think I'll let the bloggers have their day & make critical comments only after the film finishes its run. But for the time being, my rating is 3.5 out of 5, the 0.5 for effort).
Perhaps even more interesting is DI KALA BULAN MENGAMBANG (When the Moon Waxes Full) by the effervescent & Bohemian Mamat Khalid (opening at GSC on Jan 10, 2008). In style & narrative, the film's reference is to classic Hollywood film noir & its imitations as found in 1950s Malay cinema. Finally, yes, yes! I see Rosyam Nor's talents as an actor! And he's at his best when he does renditions of P Ramlee (ahem! Thanks to the director). Film buffs will have fun trying to point out the references to CASABLANCA, THE SHEIK, THE MALTESE FALCON & other classic films, including 1950s Malay cinema.
And great Caesar's ghost, I swear Charlie Chan has risen from the grave! Catch the incredible rendition of Fu Manchu from none other than the indefatigable David Teo. Yes! He puts to shame many of our veteran (!) actors! I swear he was brought into this world for only one reason - & that is, to play the role of the hotel owner in DI KALA! Get a load of his recurring: Mau masat ka? (Want a massage?). Eyes a-drooping, sallow of face, David Teo, in glorious Method acting, puts the great Marlon Brando to shame! (Perhaps he actually smoked the opium pipe prop in the film. I wouldn't put it past him).
Again Mamat Khalid presents a parody. But of what is he gleeful of this time? More of this later. Looks like an interesting time for mainstream Malaysian cinema, folks. It's finally going somewhere what with the likes of Yasmin Ahmad, Osman Ali & Mamat Khalid. Kudos to Tayangan Unggul & Grand Brilliance for their part in this but for now, I'll just give them the Orwellian two cheers (he gave it for democracy in the 1940s which is not far from the truth of present day).

aku suka karya mamat khalid. cerita dia bagi orang yang berpikir la. sapa yg kurang general knowledge dan tak paham sindiran dan kutukan yg dia nak sampaikan tu, nasiblah, memang ko rasa tak best.
sebenarnya ko yg tak paham sebab cara mamat bercerita relate banyak dgn hal ehwal malaysia atau dunia cuma dia buat ala sindiran. dalam man laksa - semua yang jadi peserta ratu cantik anak atau sedara mara AJK kampung....yang menang pun anak saudara dia. kenapa ? itulah realiti negara kita.
dalam lang buana ada isu kerakyatan cina india melayu. cuma yang suka tengok cerita seram, meleleh ala razak mohaideen memang korang takkan paham punyalah. mamat bukannya director bangang. dia lagi tinggi ilmu filem dan penulisan. nak tengok pun akai kena panjang jugak la |
