Formula One is not a sport insists Sports Minister Gill
New Delhi, Aug 31(ANI): Union Sports Minister MS Gill on Monday stuckto his remarks over Formula One (F1), and said that it is a source ofentertainment and the Ministry’s focus is on other sports.
Addressing media in the national capital Gill said: “I will stand by myearlier comment that F1 is not a sport. Our view on F1 not being asport was taken months ago. This is the most expensive entertainmentevent in the west. The technology used for the same is far beyondanything here.”
“We are focused in promoting other sports. What they want to do istheir business, we are nowhere concerned with that,” he added.
Gill’s comments  were a snub to Force India owner Vijay Mallya, who had said that F1 was indeed a sport and was a viable sport in India.
When hundreds of millions of people worldwide follow it as a sport, what makes them believe otherwise?” Mallya had said. It is believed that Sports Minister’s comment would have a significantinfluence on Mallaya’s dreams of bringing F1 to India in 2011.
According to reports, JPSK Sports, promoter of the event in India, hasalready acquired land for construction of a F1 track in Greater Noidaand have started building the track. (ANI)

Vettel philosophical about title loss
Sebastian Vettel was naturally disappointed to see his remote titlehopes evaporate in the Brazilian Grand Prix, but felt he had achievedas much as he could by charging from 15th on the grid to fourth.
Vettel finished only one place ahead of Jenson Button – not nearlyenough to stay in the title chase until the final round in Abu Dhabi –and reckoned the damage had been done in qualifying.
“I think there is a guy at Brawn who is happier than me today,” he said.
“All in all it was a good race – starting from the back and finishing fourth.
“We were helped by some people crashing, but I think fourth was the maximum we could do today.
“Without the problems in yesterday’s qualifying, we could have won the race, but we didn’t so there’s not much more to say.”
Vettel said he drove as hard as he could without worrying about thepoints permutations, but admitted he had been “praying” for rain tocome to his aid.
“The pressure wasn’t too much during the race,” he said.
“I was just focusing on each lap
“I knew that Jenson was just ahead or behind me and would score points for the
championship – but you don’t really think about it until the last couple of laps.
“Before that you never know what can still happen.
“At one point I was praying for rain, there was the smell of rain, but it didn’t come.
“Congratulations to Jenson and Brawn – I think they did the best job this year.”
Vettel judged that, in hindsight, it would have been better to pitduring the early safety car period – the tactic McLaren used to goodeffect with Lewis Hamilton, who came from even further back on the gridthan Vettel (17th) to take the final podium place.
“Obviously with the safety car in the beginning I think the one tobenefit most was Lewis, because he came in [to the pits],” said Vettel.
“It was quite a smart move in the end because everybody else was held up by this [Kamui] Kobayashi train.”
Vettel’s result moved him back ahead of Rubens Barrichello intosecond place in the drivers’ standings, but the German said this waslittle consolation: “Second is the first loser, so…
“I will just try to do my best in Abu Dhabi. Obviously the target isto win; we have a winning car, so I don’t really care about second orthird.” |
