A selection of old anatomical illustrations, which traces the development of Japanese medical knowledge during the Edo Period

This illustration from the book «Seyakuin Kainan Taizōzu», which documented the anatomy of 34-year-old offender, who was executed in 1798 autopsy performed doctors Kandzen Mikumi (Kanzen Mikumo), Rance Yoshimura (Ranshū Yoshimura) and Gensyun Koisi (Genshun Koishi).

These illustrations are taken from a copy of «Ishinhō», the oldest existing medical book in Japan . Originally written in 982 AD. e. Illustrations presented here are taken from a copy of the book, dating from about 1860.

These illustrations are from the end of the XVII century. Based on the work of Majima Sagan (Majima Seigan), who lived in the XIV century.monk, who became a doctor. According to legend, one night Seyganu had a dream in which the Buddha blessed him by giving knowledge of how to treat eye diseases.
